So, A Friend Of Mine Is Getting a 911. In fact, he's just taking his delivery today. Black 911 Carrera S. And then, I realize I never bought a brand new car. How does it feel to own a brand new car?
I mean really, you work so hard to buy your dream car. And then the day comes when a car arrived in your house, or you take the car from the dealership for a short ride. Is it feel different than buying used? did you miss your old car? Fire away your story oppo!

If all goes as planned, I will be experiencing this for the first time in a few short months. Can't wait to take delivery of a new MkVII GTI. Will report back if and when it happens =)

Can't say it was my dream car, but after I got my sonata out of necessity it was nice having the security of reliability and everything working-ness.

Honestly, probably not as good when staring at my remaining balance due. A used one would have been appropriate, but I wanted the experience.

Depends on the car...there is something special about having a "brand new" car. My 04 Cooper S was special, I ordered it exactly how I wanted and waited 3 months for it to come across the pond. My 2010 Mazda 3 was brand new, but didn't feel as special as getting my used 05 Subaru LGT wagon.

I wouldn't know. I've only bought used. To me, buying CPO makes so much more sense than brand-spanking new. You still get the warranty coverage, but you let someone else take that huge first-year depreciation hit.

Getting a new car is certainly more exciting, but I get the same sensation when I get close to something more unique from another era (e.g. Celica GT-Four).
Once the smell of new is gone, though, you sober up and get the feels; at least if you're not really wealthy to the point where you needn't care.

I have never owned a brand new car either. The only thing that bothers me is the fact I'm buying a car that some bastard has farted in the seat already.

Good luck!
I always love the looks of the MKVII. Or the looks of any golf after the MKVI Golf R.

My parents always get new cars. Mainly my dad. The reason he gets them new is because he likes to spend the extra thousands of dollars to have the peace of mind that he is the first owner. I'd do it for the new car smell. Also, theres less hunting that you have to do. What I mean by that is, I can show up to any (insert manufacturer here) dealership and request a model of a car, with this specific color and this specific trim with these specific options.
It definitely is easier than buying used.

When I bought my car, it felt much like this.....
![]() 04/23/2014 at 11:45 |

yeah, all working bits and bobs!
I remember when i bought my W140, the phone is doesn't work, and the seatbelt extender in the back was broken, and i'm a bit dissapointed.
And no the dream car sentence i took from top gear for dramatization :D

It feels good, like unwrapping a Christmas gift. But sadly, it doesn't compare to getting a neglected car back on the road. That's like saving an abandoned kitten.
My Dakota I bought brand new in 2001 (2002 model year), my Corvair I got revived after the previous owner left it sitting for 3 years.
I'm still way more attached to my Dakota though. It's taken me places, and is going to move me across the country soon. And not once has it ever let me down.

yeah, i want that too.
I think i'll get a brand new car one day, just for the experience.

1992 Holden Barina, it felt brand new like all of my used cars felt, but perhaps a cheap new car isn't a very good measure of how new cars should feel :P

It's intoxicating. Friends don't let friends drive new cars.

It does feel a bit different than buying used. It's a wonderful feeling to know you've shared every mile with that car. It makes it a bit more special, to me at least.

That was pretty much me the day I went to pick up my car from the dealer (it was a factory order). Seeing it sitting there all shiny and new, spec'd out the way I wanted it, made me feel like a little boy at Christmas...

Well, I had a hand me down from my brother and then two new cars.
The hand me down I didn't care about. It was a car. I was happy to have it, but when I took the keys from my parents it wasn't like 'OH BOY OH BOY MY CAR!', it was more like 'sweet, a car'.
Taking delivery of a new car is pretty sweet. My Kia was at another dealer and had to be brought in. Getting the call that it was ready was pretty fantastic, and pulling up to the dealer and seeing my Kia sitting out front was awesome.
The Sonic was even more special. The car had 25 miles on it when I test drove it. That was it. Twenty Five. When I bought it, I took it straight off the showroom floor. It felt pretty amazing to sit in the dealership while people walked around and sort of defend the car saying 'that's mine', and that drive home was special. Now I have nearly 12,000 miles on it and it's cool to know that it's all mine . I don't have to wonder what a previous owner did to it, I did it all.
Plus with both cars I've gotten some nice letters from the manufacturer thanking me for the purchase. Not a big deal, but little stuff like that makes me glad to have a new car.
Now I just hope someday I can actually get a car ordered exactly to my specifications, and built for me. That would be sweet.

Wait, is suzuki has rebadged one of these?
My mom has a Suzuki Forza and it looks like that.

I was saving something like this for a separate post...which maybe I'll still do, but reading a comment about "sharing all the miles with the car." I started doing dealer exchanges for a local dealer this month. I figure I've got free time when I'm not at work, why not get paid to drive new cars.
I find it funny that there are about 8 cars floating around a couple states that I've put more miles on than anyone else, I watched the odometer go from single digits, to double digits to triple digits. I can't say anything about ownership, since the newest vehicle I've owned was 3 years old, and the lowest mileage I've owned was 27k (not the same vehicle), but there's something to be said about driving a car off the lot for the first time...ever.

You want to protect it from all the dangers on the road. You'll be giving the stink eye to anyone coming to close to it. You'll want to save the new car smell forever. And you're going to keep agonizing over the first scratch it gets 2 months after it happens.

I had a MKV GTI brand new on a lease. I was 23, first real job, first real car thing, so of course it was great. At the end of 39 months and 54k miles, I faced the decision of buying for 14,500 or trading it in. Decided to give it back, and have had 4 different amazing cars since....couldn't have been happier with my decision. None of which cost more than half the lease buyout, all of which were german, manual, and insanely fun to drive. Moral of the story, don't buy new....just find a really clean unmolested E36 M3.

I had a hand me down as my first car, a kia sephia, and despite it's shitty i still thinking that's the best Kia ever made. Really, it was like "FUCK YEAH I'M NOW DRIVING A CAR! NO MORE ANNOYING PEDALING! A REAL GRAN TURISMO FOR REAL LIFE EVERYDAY!"
And then i bought 4 used cars, and i always get enthusiastic of it. Like the day i bought my first mercedes.
And to this day i still sometimes wonder what the hell the previous owner do to my car, especially when one day the suspension on my Crown get bent or the seatbelt extender in my merc went out.
And it will be very sweet to be able to order cars exactly to what you want. I'm now saving up to do that as well.

I guess that's true when i got my first scratch on my car. I can't help but look at it every time i want to go inside and drive it.

yeah, my dad too. He keeps buying a brand new mercedes somehow (W123-W140-W221)

I'd say the experience of getting any car you want is pretty similar new or used, but with new you get the added benefit of new car smell.

I've had my new car for just over 3 months, and you need to back the f' up. Where ever you are you are probably too close to it. Don't get near it. Don't touch it. Dont park next to it. I saw my first paint chip last week and I wanted to cry. I try to avoid puddles and I feel the need to wax it every 15 minutes. Mainly this is because I spent about $8k more than I intended to.
On the other hand I don't have to worry about anything. This was after replacing a motor in my former ride just to get it back and have the feeling of the transmission having separation anxiety from the motor and also wanting to go. I didn't want to go through that again so my wife and I talked over our options and decided to go new. Also used WRX's are, well, very used. I didn't test drive it because I knew there would be nothing wrong with it. If there was something wrong with it, it would be taken care of and paid for by not me. It was parked in the show room and had 18 miles on it.

Its all right. My current DD is a 2013 WRX, the first brand new car I've ever bought. Still had the plastic on the wheels when I picked it up. A year later, the only humans that have driven it are myself and Subaru service techs. It was awesome at first, but I was surprised how soon the "new" wore off. There is peace of mind knowing absolutely everything about the history of your car though. But, 1.5 years into it I'm already thinking about whats next, and I'm leaning toward another used car.
(only pic I have handy, ignore the blue thing.)
![]() 04/23/2014 at 12:51 |

yeah, i feel the same too with my W140.
One day, the paint on the bumper got chipped by some rocks and i wanted to punch myself. Thank god the merc comes with second set of bumper so i can hide the immaculate bumper until i sold it.

Yeah, so a new car is like all the excitement of getting a car + the extra excitement of it being your car from day one.
I think you can get most any car exactly how you want, but usually there will be a car similar enough to settle for or the car you want available for dealer trade. I'm talking something like a C7 Corvette: actually going into the dealer, sitting down with a salesman, and going through all the options ticking every box exactly how I want it and having the car specifically built for me.

I've driven the same truck for 18 years. I replaced it last week with a brand new WRX.
On day 1, it received the first door ding ( http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/im-joining-the… ). I was so angry when I discovered it the next morning that I could hardly focus on work. So I did the Jalop thing and left work early to get it fixed.
Since then, I've been driving it fast, parking like an asshat, and generally enjoying everything except the new-car fumes. I can't wait to complete the break-in period so I can take it to the local track for some fast laps.
My free time is now spent lurking in the Subaru club forums, thinking about the first mods, and general wishing I was driving instead of doing just about everything else....

Bought my FRS with 7 miles on the odometer, dealer had hardly finished moving it onto the showroom floor when I took it for a test drive. Purchasing a car (new to me) of any sort it the best feeling!

I think buying a car as expensive as the one pictured would feel amazing, but would be followed quickly by regret, knowing you could have bought the same car, gently used, for half the price after a few years.
I hope your friend has substantial savings built up already. Lost opportunity cost is a bitch...

I got a kia sephia for hand me down. Simply because my father tell me that "If you hate that shitbox then work hard to get whatever car that you want"
He's some kind of medical student, but he never finish his study (i think)

Awesome and terrifying at the same time. Awesome knowing that it is yours, new, not someone else hand me down thing. But also every little pebble, scratch will drive you nuts. Its weird, my weekend classic has scratches and dings all over the place but are viewed as battle scars, to be flaunted and shown throughout the land. My boring DD on the other hand. "OMG a scratch, is it going to come out, I have to wax it now!!!"
![]() 04/24/2014 at 11:41 |

Its not as jalop as I would like, but I love it all the same. Two years ago I bought a brand new 2012 Civic Coupe, drove it off the lot with 11 miles on it, 6 of which were my test drive. For me it was one of the best days ever, 18 year old that saved up enough to buy a car, I opted out of payments and instead paid for it in full the day I bought it. It made my dad really proud too.
![]() 04/24/2014 at 11:46 |

I see both sides of the fence. I see that it's dumb to buy new, since you typically loose $10k just driving off the lot. It's also nice because there is likely already some "wear or damage" so you don't have to suffer through the first scratch or door ding. Buying used at the right time also can provide those sweet spots where the car is new enough that it just about to hit the first major service so that YOU the new owner can make sure is done right, all while saving a ton from depreciation. There is also the sweet spot of nearly at the bottom of the depreciation where you can pick up a nicely serviced car or one that needs just the right amount of work you are willing to put in (say maintenance items like tires, brakes, and belts).
Back on topic, 3 years ago we (wife and I) bought our first brand new vehicle for her. I was scared about "throwing money away" and throwing all the money at a car that could be a lemon or not perfect (my expectations for buying new). I still suffer from this today but can balance it out with the benefits. For the benefits it is simply wonderful to have a new car and know the complete history. When a dent happened (luckly none so far), the first scratch (1 week after purchase caused by my car flipping debris up from the road), when that new noise started, and what the service history is. This can go a long way in easing the mental state as a person can feel much more confident in the reliability of the car. My wife knows the car is rreliable and starts every time. It's never been in for a repair, which is a lot of the reason we avoided German cars (even though my wife really wanted one). In the end, we are very happy with the car, we can afford it, and it has been a pleasure to own & drive.... still though, I can't stop thinking about what if we bought a Corvette, 3 series, or some other car instead :)

The day I drove home in my brand new Mazdaspeed3 I was wearing a grin almost as big as the one on my car. 7 months and over 10k miles later and I'm still giddy every time I look out at my driveway and see the little red hatch out there, grinning like an idiot. Every time I turn it on and the audio system display says Zoom-Zoom, everytime I put the hammer down and the car tries its hardest to leave me behind...I couldn't possibly be happier with my purchase and it's nice to know there's no previous owner neglect waiting to spoil the fun

I have had several new cars even though I thought I would always buy used. I would say that the biggest single difference is the peace of mind you have knowing that it is brand new and nothing is a time bomb because someone hit a curb with it.
I will also mention that, without a doubt, buying a my 3rd new car was the best. We paid cash for it (via bank check, but I was seriously considering a briefcase full of cash).
It was terrifying to drop that much coin (>$40k) and to know the car is your responsibility, but having the knowledge that it is yours with no note is awesome. It also helped that it is a great car to drive....
